5 Ways to Be Kind to Your Mind Amid a Cancer Diagnosis
Patients impacted by cancer have needs that extend far beyond the medical and physical. Marangeli Friger, MD, GenesisCare Radiation Oncologist, shares 5 ways that may help you or a loved one navigate a cancer diagnosis:
- Embrace what you’re feeling. When you’re diagnosed with cancer, you may feel a sense of societal pressure to put on a brave face. It’s important to allow yourself to experience what you’re truly feeling, and understand that all feelings are valid.
- Personalize stress management. Do what you can to minimize your stress levels but do so in a way that works best for you. For example, some people may prefer to relax by listening to music rather than meditating.
- Advocate for yourself. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! It is important to ensure that you know all your available options, and that your treatment plan includes the latest, evidence-based techniques to achieve an optimal outcome. Seek treatments that help with the psychosocial impact of cancer, such as tattoo-free radiation therapy for breast cancer which allows for a scar-free treatment.
- Prioritize you. Be kind to yourself by doing things that make you feel good such as eating right and exercising. Ask yourself if you’re making time to do the things you love and say no to the things you don’t enjoy.
- Seek support. Whether online or in-person, talking to others who’ve shared similar experiences can help you address a multitude of issues, from psychological, emotional, physical, occupational and sexual. GenesisCare offers support groups where those impacted by cancer can find the support they need.
Dealing with cancer is difficult for even the most mentally tough among us. Addressing every aspect of how cancer impacts you can have both immediate and long-term benefits.
